High School SIP provides an opportunity to spend a summer working at the NIH side-by-side with some of the leading scientists in the world, in an environment devoted exclusively to biomedical research. HS-SIP internships cover a minimum of eight weeks, and students must begin on one of two start dates in June (June 13th and June 24th). The NIH Institutes and Centers and the Office of Intramural Training & Education (OITE) sponsor a required summer orientation on each of the start dates that must be completed before the interns join their research groups. The OITE also offers a wide range of summer high school activities including lectures featuring distinguished NIH investigators, career/professional development workshops, college readiness activities, and Summer Poster Day.
