Theatre

Our Theatre Arts Division is an immersive, hands-on exploration into stage performance and production. A rigorous combination of classes and rehearsals provide students with a challenging and inspiring learning environment every day for 5 weeks. Working with professional theatre practitioners from around the country, students receive extraordinary training in a collaborative and supportive environment.

  • Every Theatre Arts student performs in one of our highly regarded final productions, presented to the public in repertory during the final week of the program. Design/Tech students serve as stage manager for these full realized productions.
  • The NHSI allows students to create theatre without placing any focus on grades or numeric evaluations. Students can feel free to try every exercise, idea, style, etc., to their fullest without fear of ‘failure.’
  • We create a safe environment to explore and experiment, while at the same time pushing actors and designers to discover themselves and to take their art to new and unexpected levels.

Theatre Arts and Design/Tech: July 1 - August 4, 2018

Musical Theatre Extension: August - August 18, 2018

Acting on Camera

An intensive five-week course focused on tailoring performances to the screen, students learn how to analyze character, make strong performance choices, and basic production techniques.

Production

The production concentration is intended to teach a wide range of practical strategies and tools available for creating film meaning, and to encourage creative approaches to production. Students are instructed in both technical and aesthetic aspects of film-making through hands-on exercises and short projects. All students learn in Northwestern editing Labs.

Screenwriting

“A good story well told”: Screenwriting students study fundamentals of storytelling and screenplay structure, gaining an understanding of the most important part of any film: the story. Built on a foundation of practical application and interdisciplinary collaboration, students are exposed to great works of cinema that inform and enrich their final productions.
