Cultural appropriation is the act of an individual from a particular (usually privileged or dominant) culture adopting cultural/religious elements of a marginalized culture without an understanding of their relevance. As a result, valuable cultural symbols are stripped of their meaning, furthering the cycle of oppression. Often, people, while well-intended, mistakenly appropriate another's culture with what they believe to be a "fashion statement."
How can we, as a community, act sensibly and navigate the blurry line between the two sides?
